GUSTAVO COSTA
Born in 1976 in Porto, began his musical studies in 1989 in the Escola de Jazz do Porto. In 1998, he concluded the percussion course in the Escola Profissional de Música de Espinho, under the guidance of Michael Bernat. In 2002, he obtained a degree in Music Production and Technologies, at the Escola Superior de Música e das Artes do Espectáculo, in Porto. He studied drums at the Drumtech Music Institute, in London, and Sonology at the Royal Conservatory in the Hague, having Konrad Boehmer and Clarence Barlow as teachers. In 2010, he obtained his master´s degree in Composition and Music Theory at the Escola Superior de Música e das Artes do Espectáculo, in Porto, where he studied with the teachers Dimitris Andrikopoulus and Frederick Gifford, attending composition seminars by Jonathan Harvey and Kaija Saariaho. As a musician and composer, he has participated in numerous musical projects in the fields of underground rock, improvised music and electroacoustic music. He has played with Damo Suzuki, Steve Mackay, Jamie Saft, John Zorn´s Cobra (conducted by John Zorn), Barbez, Três Tristes Tigres, Mark Stewart, Bruce Geduldig, Alfred Harth, Margareth Kammerer, Martin Brandlmeyer, Raz Mesinai, Massimo Pupilo, Helge Hinteregger, Xavier Charles and Adolfo Luxúria Canibal, among several other artists. He has played in 19 european countries, the USA, Lebanon and Japan, and his work has been published by several record labels. He obtained the 1st prize in the Música Viva 2000 electroacoustic composition competition, promoted by Miso Music. He worked as an assistant professor in the Electronic Music and Musical Production course at the Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas, in Castelo Branco, as well as in the composition course at the Escola Superior de Música do Porto. In current days, he is attending the doctoral program in Digital Media at FEUP, in Porto, holding a scholarship granted by the Fundação de Ciência e Tecnologia.
